Is an altseason coming? What to expect from the next cycles

After long periods of consolidation and uncertain movements, questions that stir the market are beginning to emerge: is an altseason coming? Interest in altcoins is increasing, sentiment is improving slightly, and analyses attempting to anticipate what might happen in the coming months are multiplying.

There are contradictory signs, encouraging indicators, and legitimate doubts. The idea is to understand what really moves the market and to what extent these movements might suggest the approach of a new phase.

What is an altseason and why doesn't it happen suddenly?

An altseason occurs when altcoins, in a generalized way, begin to outperform Bitcoin. It is not just about a few isolated projects rising, but a visible trend across the majority of the market. This phenomenon usually emerges when Bitcoin has already recovered enough to attract confidence but enters a more stable phase that leads investors to seek higher returns in other assets. Ultimately, it is a process that combines liquidity, confidence, and risk appetite.

Looking at past cycles, it is noticeable that an altseason never appears at the beginning of a bull market. It emerges later, when the market is more comfortable, when there is more liquidity circulating, and when Bitcoin stops absorbing the majority of the attention.

Does Bitcoin continue to dictate the market's pace?

Many investors wonder if the price of Bitcoin will recover, and the truth is that Bitcoin remains the emotional anchor of the market. Its evolution defines much of the behavior of the remaining cryptocurrencies. Whenever it recovers after a prolonged correction period, the rest of the market reacts.

The historical pattern after each halving

Historical data, according to CoinMarketCap, shows that the most consistent recovery tends to happen after halvings, when the reduction in issuance creates an environment of scarcity that, in other cycles, has driven strong gains.

After the 2012 halving, which reduced the reward to 25 BTC per block, the market peaked in 2013. The same pattern repeated in 2017, after the reward fell to 12.5 BTC, and again in 2021, when it dropped to 6.25 BTC. In 2024, the reward fell to 3.125 BTC and the peak of this cycle is still unknown.

Is an altseason coming? What to expect from the next cycles

How to know if an altseason is coming?

Although no one can predict the market with total certainty, there are signs that frequently precede strong phases for altcoins. Bitcoin dominance is one of the first: when it rises consistently and then stabilizes without losing its trend, it begins to open space for alternative assets. Another relevant indicator is the growth of liquidity in stablecoins, which shows whether there is capital ready to enter crypto.

Social signals also emerge, such as increased searches, more discussions about specific narratives, and higher activity on social networks. Terms related to altcoins, memecoins, and future trends gain traction when sentiment improves.

In Portugal, these movements are followed closely. The local community has become more participatory, fueled by meetups, online groups, and the international visibility brought by events like the Web Summit and various conferences dedicated to Web3. Whenever signs of a possible cycle shift appear, there is immediate interest among Portuguese investors, who follow the global market almost in real time.

Is the connection between Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and altcoins deeper than it seems?

Yes. The evolution of one influences the others. If Bitcoin recovers solidly, it creates an environment of confidence that opens the door for risk. If altcoins begin to absorb part of that liquidity, meme coins like Dogecoin tend to react with intensity. And, if the narrative gains strength, the sentiment can spread across the entire market, which, in other cycles, coincided with the start of an altseason.

It is a complex mechanism: macroeconomics, social behavior, monetary policies, technology, and hype coexist in the same space. That is why predicting trends is so difficult, but also so fascinating.

How might Dogecoin react to a potential altseason?

Dogecoin is a unique case in the market. Its strength has never been in cutting-edge technology, but rather in culture, humor, and community, which are elements that continue to have real impact. Whenever there is an increase in speculation, DOGE tends to be one of the first tokens to gain traction, especially on social media. It is a highly narrative-driven asset and, therefore, sensitive to hype cycles.

The question is that there is no single answer regarding the future of Dogecoin. What is known is that:

  • the community remains gigantic
  • the token is still one of the most mentioned on social networks
  • meme coins tend to react in an exaggerated way during moments of high liquidity

If a favorable environment emerges, with Bitcoin recovering and altcoins gaining strength, Dogecoin could benefit more quickly than more technical projects. However, it also carries higher risks, given its dependence on external narratives and volatility.

How is altcoin behavior evolving in 2025?

Altcoins do not all move at the same time. Most recent cycles show a kind of "natural order" in the flow of liquidity: first Bitcoin, then large altcoins like ETH and SOL, and only later smaller-cap tokens. This phased movement indicates that an altseason is not a sudden event, but a slow process that gains strength as confidence increases.

Furthermore, the sector is more diversified than ever. Today, altcoins are divided into categories with distinct behaviors:

  • Layer 2
  • DeFi
  • RWA
  • gaming
  • meme coins
  • infrastructure

Each segment responds to different factors and not all rise at the same time. Therefore, a current altseason could have very different characteristics from previous ones.

What if the altseason doesn't happen?

A classic altseason might not emerge, that is, those explosive and generalized gains that many remember from previous cycles. The market is more mature, more regulated, and more segmented, which means that not all altcoins rise at the same time and that certain narratives may advance while others are left behind. In these scenarios, many investors opt for more balanced approaches, such as gradual entries, limited diversification, and increased attention to concrete metrics, rather than relying solely on the expectation of collective euphoria.

Despite some positive signs, other indicators continue to show caution. The Altcoin Season Index, which measures how many altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin, remains below the threshold that would define a clear altseason.

In such a context, relying on platforms that facilitate market reading becomes essential. Many investors turn to WEEX for its simplicity and the tools that help track these cycles with greater clarity. The crypto market remains cyclical but rarely predictable, and perhaps it is precisely this unpredictability that keeps the question of whether an altseason is coming alive, cycle after cycle.
